Journalist Mohammed Ali is poised to be the next MP of Nyali after his main challenger Said Abdalla popularly known as "Saido" conceded defeat on Wednesday.

Abdalla who is Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho's brother said he had already moved on and respected the will and choice of the people.

"It was a tight race. We have learnt from our mistakes and we shall put a strong fight in future.

I would like to [congratulate] my opponent Mohammed Ali on winning the seat. I sincerely thank all those who took their time to come out and vote for me yesterday," Abdalla posted on Facebook.

According to the results, Ali had taken a commanding lead of 22,348 votes against Abdalla's 13,673 votes.

Ali, a former journalist known for his "Jicho Pevu" series, ran as an independent after bolting out of ODM shortly after the nominations in April.

In those ODM primaries, Saido got 3,671 votes against Ali’s 2,987 votes.

However, Ali immediately called the elections a sham citing massive irregularities in the process.

Ali claimed there was an elaborate plan executed by Abdalla that eventually saw him “rigged out” of the party primaries.

Ali complained that the whole nomination exercise was massively flawed and skewed in favour of Joho’s brother.

The former KTN journalist further claimed that Joho’s family had agents in all polling stations where they were dishing out money to voters to influence their decision.
