Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Charles Keter has refuted claims doing rounds that electricity bills have been backdated and power consumers are going to pay more.
According to the CS, the reports are not true and Kenya power will be addressing the billing queries as they plan to sift to a new billing system.
“The report that electricity bills have been backdated is not true. There will be no estimation of meters. You are billed on actuals or you are not billed so that we avoid this backdating” said Charles Keter
He added that there will be an application that customers will be given on their cellphones that will help translates the data to the billing system of KPLC.

One of the units of Olkaria, about 30MW is still down. By February we are expecting that unit to be up” added Charles Keter
This comes after it was reported that Kenyans are expected to pay nearly double of the KPLC utility bills from January 2018.
The rise in electricity costs had been attributed to backdated Sh8.1 billion charges that were not charged last year.
Kenya Power normally charges customers an extra fuel that is incurred when it uses diesel generator.
Their Financial statement for year ended June 2017 showed that fuel cost went high as a result of the severe drought last year which adversely affected hydropower production.
