Murang'a and Kirinyaga Counties among most corrupt in the country

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission of Kenya released the Corruption Index on Tuesday.

The report, titled 2016 National Ethics and Corruption Survey, measures the levels of corruption in the country.

According to the survey, the leading forms of corruption bribery favoritism and delay in service delivery.

The commission reported a 10% drop in the level of trust Kenyans have in the government's commitment to fighting corruption.

The research involved 5,908 respondents and took place from August 15 to September 17, 2016.

Most corrupt counties

The report detailed the top ten counties leading in corruption. They were:

  • Murang'a
  • Trans Nzoia
  • Mandera
  • Kirinyaga
  • Marsabit
  • Tharaka Nithi
  • Meru
  • Laikipia
  • Machakos
  • Nyandarua

Most corrupt ministries

These are the top 5 most corrupt government ministries according to the index.

  • Interior and Coordination of National Government
  • Health
  • Devolution and Planning
  • Education, Science and Technology
  • Transport and Infrastructure

Least Corrupt Counties

These counties scored low on the corruption index and were found to be the least corrupt counties in the country. (Bottom ten list)

  • Kilifi
  • Migori
  • Kisii
  • Elgeyo-Marakwet
  • Kwale
  • Wajir
  • Kericho
  • Tana River
  • Taita Taveta
  • Lamu

Busia county recorded the highest average bribe rate with Sh81 million exchanged in bribes.

The National Police Service was classified as the most corrupt institution.
