Matatu owners have taken action following NYS move to introduce Sh. 50 bus transport.

The National Youth Service on Thursday made known that it will have its buses ferrying commuters so as to help alleviate the shortage of ‘matatus’ during rainy seasons.

Matatu owners are not impressed with the initiative and have objected to it.

Matatu Owners Association through its chair Simon Kimutai together with Matatu Welfare Association Dickson Mbugua told the Star that they will exasperate the inventiveness until it fails.

The NYS Director General Dr. Richard Ndubai made the announcement on a series of tweets. He stated that 27 buses will be deployed to help solve the issue of commuter crisis when fares are hiked due to heavy rains.

“We have witnessed people in Nairobi walking long distances in the rain and most of the time due to high fares charged by commuter vehicles. We shall do the much we can to alleviate the suffering,” he said.

Routes NYS buses will ply

PSV vehicles in most parts of the country are used to skyrocketing fares when it rains hence inconveniencing passengers.

Ndubai revealed that the NYS buses will charge Sh. 50 irrespective of the distance and the season.

NYS buses will operate on various routes. They include; Mwiki, Githurai, Dandora, Njenga, Kibera, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Kawangware and Kariobangi.

Ndubai however made it clear that more vehicles will be deployed later.
