Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Interior and co-ordination Dr. Fred Matiangi has taken action against National Resistance Movement hours after Raila Odinga’s swearing-in.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 22 of the prevention of organized crimes act 2010, the cabinet secretary Ministry of Interior and co-ordination of National government declares National Resistance movement (NRM) to be organized criminal group for the purpose of the act” reads the Gazette notice
According to the law a person who commits an offence under this section shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding five hundred thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years or to both.
Last month Attorney General Githu Muigai warned Nasa leader Raila Odinga that he faced the death penalty should he be sworn in as "people’s president"
The AG insisted that Mr Odinga’s planned inauguration would be illegal as Kenya already has a sitting president.
Such a move, he warned, amounts to treason, whose penalty is death.
“Government institutions will do what they are mandated to do if and when the time is right,” Prof Muigai warned
"I Raila Amolo Odinga, in full realisation of the high calling, assume the office of the People's President of the Republic of Kenya," in the oath administered by Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang.
