The Interior and Coordination ministry has been forced to respond after widespread reports of a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) curfew in Nairobi, just hours to NASA leader Raila Odingas swearing in ceremony.

The alarming message was issued by a Facebook account purporting to be run by the office of the Government Spokesman.

In one post, the account stated that the KDF would take charge of the security situation in Nairobi starting Monday evening.

A second message from the account showed an image of what looked like a gazette notice signed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

Pulselive.co.ke has, however, established that the messages are fake news intended to cause panic.

"There is a fake document circulating on social media purporting to declare curfew in Nairobi County from tonight. Kenyans are urged to ignore it and go about their normal business unperturbed," Interior Ministry spokesperson Mwenda Njoka stated.

The message was further echoed by States House Director of Digital Communication Dennis Itumbi, "This is a Fake account and the document attached and circulating is also FAKE. Ignore!"
