The Nasa flagbearer and running mate Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka have come under a scathing attack after the East Africa Legislative Assembly (Eala) nominees from their parties were revealed.

The stinging criticism stemmed from the fact that ODM and Wiper parties had proposed the names of Raila’s brother Oburu Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka’s son Kennedy Kalonzo to represent Kenya at the East African Legislative Assembly.

Leading the onslaught was National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale who said he will mobilise legislators across both sides of the political divide to reject the two names when they are presented to parliament for approval.

“ODM and Wiper are huge parties. We will not allow Raila and Kalonzo to reward their brothers and sons. This is the kind of leadership Kenyans should expect if Raila becomes the President,” Duale said.

Wiper rebellion

Duale’s sentiments were echoed by a section of Wiper leaders who openly castigated their party leader Musyoka and said they would oppose his son.

Mwingi North MP John Munuve and Mbooni MP Kisoi Munyao criticized the appointment and vowed to oppose the young Musyoka’s name at the committee stage and on the floor of the House.

“I will attend the committee sittings as to oppose this appointment. Wiper should have nominated another person because Kenyans have rewarded his father with high ranking public offices,” Mr Munuve declared.

Mr Munuve said it is the height of selfishness for Mr Musyoka to ask Kenyans to elect him to the highest political office while at the same time pushing parliament to approve his son’s nomination to EALA.

As a result of the backlash, Oburu in a statement to newsrooms said that he would decline the offer to join EALA days after he lost the ODM nominations in his Bondo Constituency.

Kenya has nine positions at EALA, with five positions preserved for the Jubilee party and the four others left to the opposition.
