Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has been accorded a special new role in the Nasa team with elections only 46 days away.

Joho has been appointed to lead the candidates and the Nyanza presidential campaign team in the vote hunt across the Nyanza region.

Joho who is also the ODM deputy party leader, is expected to lead the orange party’s candidates in a series of planned rallies to popularise Nasa flag bearer Raila Odinga’s candidature and consolidate the votes in the region regarded as the bedrock of the Opposition.

The Mombasa Governor has in past weeks appeared to have a taken a backseat role as he concentrated on his own campaigns at the Coast.

Joho faces stiff competition to retain his gubernatorial seat from Wiper’s Senator Hassan Omar and Jubilee's Suleiman Shahbal who have in recent weeks stepped up their campaigns as Joho was traversing the country with Raila in several Nasa rallies.

The rallies are also strategically aimed at stemming out the popularity of independent candidates, most of who had lost out in the bruising ODM primaries in April.

The independents it appears have started making inroads in Raila’s backyard despite the Nasa flagbearer urging the region’s supporters to adopt the six-piece voting during the August elections.

The rallies are expected to start in Ahero town, Nyando, Kenyatta sports grounds and the Kirembe grounds in Kisumu town.

The Nyanza campaign team will be assisted by Senator Anyang Nyong’o who is now the Kisumu ODM gubernatorial candidate, Nyando MP Fred Outa, Homa Bay woman rep Gladys Wanga, nominated MP Oburu Oginga and Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga.
