President Uhuru Kenyatta has said Nasa leaders already know that they will lose the August elections and that is why they have nominated themselves for various positions as a safety net.

Kenyatta singled out Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka claiming that he had included his name in the list of nominated senators.

“Kalonzo is my friend. But I have to say the truth. If he was confident they would win and form the next government, he would not be looking for a senate position,” Kenyatta said during a campaign tour in Bungoma County.

Kenyatta also took a swipe at Nasa principal Moses Wetangula who has declared his intention to defend his Bungoma Senatorial seat.

Accompanied by his Deputy William Ruto, Kenyatta told the Western region leaders not to gamble and place their hopes in team that was not confident in their win hence their reason of still vying for other elected positions.

Chama Cha Mashinani party leader Isaac Ruto who is another Nasa co-principal is also defending his Bomet gubernatorial seat against a strong challenge from Jubilee’s Joyce Laboso who is also the Sotik MP and National Assembly Deputy Speaker.

However, in a swift rejoinder, Kalonzo rubbished Kenyatta’s claims that he had nominated himself as a senator after the August elections.

However, according to the law, any assertion that Kalonzo can be a nominated senator is virtually impossible.

The Constitution and the revised Elections Act states that a candidate who has been cleared to contest an election automatically loses the right to be nominated irrespective of his or her standing in the party, hence automatically locking out Kalonzo who is listed as Raila Odinga’s running mate.

The senate nomination list has 20 nomination slots, with 18 of them being strictly reserved for women while the other two are a reserve for the youth and a person living with disability.
