Chebukati disappoints Parliament, issues new request

Chebukati's only request

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Wednesday failed to appear before the National Assemblys Justice and Legal Affairs Committee.

Mr. Chebukati excused himself from the meeting stating that the electoral body was conducting two by-elections in the country.

The IEBC Chair asked the Parliamentarians to reschedule the meeting for next week after the polls in Nyeri’s Ruguru area and Kwale’s Kinondo.

Two other commissioners Prof Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu also missed the meeting.

Chebukati was summoned to explain why the three commissioners; Consolata Maina (also the IEBC Vice Chair), Margaret Mwachanya, and Paul Kurgat, resigned.

The MPs also wanted to know about the crisis the electoral body was currently facing.

"What we have now is a letter stating why the 3 remaining IEBC commissioners are unable to appear before this committee I agree that they should have communicated much earlier,"  Baringo North MP William Cheptumo.
