NASA leader Raila Odingas decision to pick Suna East MP Junet Mohamed as the Minority Whip in the National Assembly has sparked division in NASA.
Details have now emerged that Odinga picked the legislator as a reward for his steadfast loyalty to the coalition and his ability to marshal coalitions MPs.
However, Odinga's decision has sparked a fresh row with a section of MPs from Amani National Congress (ANC) threatening to leave NASA.
The MPs demanded that the party be given the deputy minority leader’s position, stating that ANC had settled on Lugari MP Ayub Savula for the position. "This was the decision taken after the parliamentary group meeting and this demand has to be met as soon as yesterday, otherwise we have already decided our next step of action if the demands are not met,” Butere MP Tindi Mwale affirmed.Leaders from Coast region led by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff said that they should be treated equally in the coalition considering the region had been loyal to Odinga.They also demanded that the Minority whip position is reserved for Coast leaders.“Coast MPs have unanimously agreed to give the Minority Whip position to Suleiman Dori (Msambweni MP),” he stated.The Minority Whip is responsible for mobilising members to push the coalition’s agenda in the House.
NASA's list for house leadership comprises of Suba South MP John Mbadi as minority leader and Kathiani MP Robert Mb as his deputy.On the other hand, Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa was appointed Mr Mohamed’s deputy.On Tuesday, ODM director of communications, Philip Etale divulged that talks were at an advanced stage to solve the stalemate regarding the house leadership."Talks are at an advanced stage with regard to issues surrounding the Minority Leadership in Parliament. Principals are on top of things. Anything else being said by or attributed to any Member of the Coalition should be treated as personal statement/remark(s)," Etale tweeted.
