It has now emerged that Deputy President William Ruto was not fully consulted in the naming of part of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet on Friday.

The Nation on Sunday reported multiple sources indicating that unlike in 2013 where consultations led to unanimity on the choice of CSs, Ruto did not agree with Kenyatta’s choices which ultimately led to his choice to keep off the naming ceremony.

It has also emerged that contrary to a section of media reports which indicated the DP was still on holiday in India, Ruto had already jetted back on Friday and spent part of the day in his Harambee Avenue office.

Reports indicate that the President only informed his deputy of his decision to name new cabinet a few minutes to the State Address.

Kenyatta had kept secret his cabinet changes, only informing his younger brother, Muhoho Kenyatta and the head of the National Intelligence Service – Phillip Kameru.

The Deputy President is said to have opposed all the new names nominated Uhuru’s cabinet. He had insisted on having a Cabinet that is loyal to him, for purposes of his 2022 presidential run.

Ruto successfully campaigned against former Marsabit Governor Ukur Yattani in the 2017 general election.

He is also said to have been uncomfortable with John Munyes and Keriako Tobiko – instead preferring well-grounded politicians.

The tension between Kenyatta and his deputy were further compounded by talk of Senator Gideon Moi being nominated to cabinet or have one of his allies picked ahead of his 2022 race.
