Deputy President William Ruto has revealed that he is powerless when it comes to cabinet appointments.

Speaking in Meru County during the the burial of three African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) bishops who perished in a tragic accident, Ruto said he he did not have the powers to supervise who the president appoints or nominates to the cabinet.

“We should all give the president room to pick Cabinet Secretaries without speculating on who will make it or not,” said DP Ruto.

The DP warned Kenyans against speculations on the formation of the Cabinet saying the president should be allowed the freedom to choose who will serve in government.

Last Sunday, Ruto dismissed reports of a dispute between him and President Kenyatta over the selection of the Cabinet.

Speculations were rife that the President and his deputy did not see eye to eye over the new cabinet appointments after the absence of Ruto during the announcement at State House.

In 2013, the two cut a united figure as they named their first cabinet appointments and were seen holding hands and laughing together at State House.

Last week, in an address to the nation, retained Cabinet secretaries Fred Matiang’i (Interior), Charles Keter (Energy), Najib Balala (Tourism), Henry Rotich (Treasury), Joe Mucheru (ICT) and James Macharia (Transport) in the absence of Ruto.

He at the same time appointed new CSs who include Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko, former Marsabit governor Ukur Yatani and former Turkana Senator John Munyes.
