Sossion announces teachers’ countrywide strike

Teachers are tired!

The Kenya National Union of teacher (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has announced a nationwide teachers strike on September 1.

While speaking to members of the Union in Nyamira, the KNUT SG said that teachers would not support some of the policies proposed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)

According to Citizen, Sossion demanded that TSC immediately stops the ongoing transfer of teachers saying that it was demoralizing them.

His sentiments were supported by KNUT National treasurer John Matiang’i who said that the plan to have all students wear same uniform was another scandal being created.

New recommendations

The teachers union is against new recommendations by the Ministry of Education to have all boarding schools turned into day schools following the recent acts of students burning schools.

They also want the TSC to do away with the new system of promoting teachers using performance contracts.
