A new study has found that repeated intake of brufen can cause infertility in men.

The report published in the Journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday found that when young men, mostly athletes, take certain doses of the pain killer they develop a hormonal condition that is linked to reduced fertility.

The study was a continuation research conducted by the director of the Institute of Research in Environmental and Occupational Health in France which focused on the effects of pain killers on pregnant women.

The three studied pain killers were aspirin, paracetamol and brufen.

From the findings of their studies they discovered that the pain killers affected the testicles of male babies.

Senior scientist in the Department of Neurology at Copenhagen University Hospital explained that the three drugs were anti-androgenic which basically means that they affect the male hormones.

Pregnant women are urged to seek medical advice before taking any pain killers.

How the study was conducted

Further research was conducted on 31 male volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35.

14 participants were given a daily dosage of brufen that mostly athletes take which is 600 milligrams twice a day.

“The use of over the counter ibuprofen results in a disorder in the human testis caused by a boost of the male hormones,” read the study.

The men that took brufen experienced signs of dysfunctional testicles within 14 days.

Other causes of infertility in men

Other known causes of infertility in men include being overweight, low sperm count caused by pesticides in certain foods.
