Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale was on Thursday chased out of Laini Saba ward where he had gone to represent Jubilee party candidate McDonald Mariga.

Dr Khalwale was seen walking frantically as rowdy youth followed closely behind throwing stones and hurling insults at the politician.

The former Senator was unaccompanied by bodyguards or other politicians, however, some locals attempted to protect him from attacks.

Khalwale has been vocal in promoting Mariga's bid for the seat despite vigorous campaigns against the Jubilee candidate.

Skirmishes in Kibra by-election

The mini-poll begun on time on Thursday morning with polling stations being opened as early as 6 a.m. though most stations reported low voter turn-out.

Some of the locals blamed the poor turn-out on it being a working day therefore most voters may have been reporting to their formal employment jobs.

Up to three people had been arrested before noon over voter bribery claims with residents having alerted authorities to their activities at Mashimoni Squatters and Old Kibra polling stations.
