National Youth Service (NYS) officers will be making door-to-door visits collecting data on utilities.

A statement from Kenya Power PLC outlined that it had partnered with the NYS as part of their #DigitizingTheGrid initiative.

According to the statement, uniformed servicemen will be visiting Kenya Power customers to collect the specific coordinates for all pre-paid and post-paid electricity meters.

"NYS officers conducting the exercise must be in uniform, and must have their national ID to facilitate identification. Please grant the officers access to your premises," the Kenya Power notice read in part.

How to Identify NYS officers

Aside from the requirement that all NYS officers be in uniform, Kenya Power provided a five-step verification process for Kenyans to use before allowing the officers into their homes.

To confirm the identity of the uniformed NYS officer in front of you:-

  1. Dial *977#
  2. Select 5: for 'Jua for Sure'
  3. Select 2: for 'Contractor' option
  4. Enter the officer's ID number and send
  5. You will get a message confirming the identity of the officer

"Report anyone impersonating the NYS officers to the nearest Police Station or by calling hotline number 0711031848. Note: NYS officers are not collecting money on behalf of Kenya Power na hawakuji kukata stima (and they are not there to disconnect your electricity connection)," KP clarified.
