Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has once again issued a statement against the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020.
The statement seen by Pulse Live indicated that the governor had been otherwise influenced to declare support for the BBI Bill.
Governor Kibwana stated that his view was "completely opposite" when he joined Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua and county assembly representatives in announcing that the two counties would approve the draft Bill.
The governor went on to call for a referendum after the 2022 General Election.
"In my considered opinion, we should postpone constitutional review until after 2022 elections. After that we should revisit the Bomas Draft. It is not judicious to handle reconstitution of IEBC, delimitation of constituencies, referendum and a general election inside 12 months.
"In February 2021 I deferred to the public participation ( PP) held under the Makueni County Assembly, the county organ mandated to consider the BBI bill. However my personal position was the opposite. I deferred to the final PP decision," he stated.
