President William Ruto's daughter, Charlene Ruto has unveiled a competition for the youth in which the winner will bag USD 1500.
Known for her outspoken nature and youth advocacy, Charlene took to social media announcing that the competition dubbed the Website Design Competition will be open to Kenyans 18 and 35 years.
Those keen on bagging the prize will showcase their prowess in website design.
Requirements to win Charlene Ruto's website competition
Kenya's first daughter detailed the requirements, noting that participants are required to team up as a group of three and furnish her with links to websites that the team or members have created.
A technical proposal for the website that they intend to create for The Young People's Network International platform is also a requirement, with IDs and profiles of all 3 team members expected to accompany every submission.
It’s time for our next big thing... the website competition! Are you between 18 and 35 years old? Team up in groups of 3 and show us what you’ve got.
The competition which opened on Saturday, January 11, 2025 will run for 30 days with the end date of Tuesday, February 11, 2025 upon which the winner will be announced.
The announcement sparked mixed reactions with some accusing her of misusing the talent of the youth and others praising Charlene for creating opportunities for the youth
Critics opined that the prize needed to be reviewed upwards, noting while the amount appeared decent, each member in the winning group would pocket USD 500.
Some advised her to just hire someone to do the website, noting that the competition will see thousands of young people put in hours of work only to go unpaid as only the winning group will bag the prize.
Isaac Maiywa: Hire someone to do it. This might sound trivial to you, but think about the group of young people who will put in all their time and effort, only to go unpaid because you decided to go with another group. While it’s a noble idea, whenever time and effort are involved, those contributing should be fairly compensated. From my experience, design work and similar tasks take several hours to complete. Be considerate and supportive of these young people.
John Njeru: $1500 for 3 websites and time it would take for team to build doesn't adds up. You can do better.
Zollz: Mnafarm for ideas pia? Just pay someone who is good to do it
Grigor Andolov: Why not a competition of silhouettes?
Bwambale Chance Tsindika: Thank you for what you are doing to engage & empower the Kenyan youth productively.
Youth President001: Great and May the most-deserving Win
