Former Malkia strikers star Janet Wanja has passed on.

The former Malkia Strikers setter who had been a towering figure in Kenyan volleyball, passed away while undergoing treatment for gallbladder cancer.

Wanja’s passing was confirmed by her brother, Kevin Kimani, who expressed the family’s sorrow and extended gratitude to those who supported her throughout her battle.

The family of Janet Wanja would like to announce her passing on after a brave battle with gallbladder cancer. Our sincere and deepest gratitude goes out to Kenya Pipeline Company for walking the journey with us from the beginning and tirelessly providing all she needed in terms of medical support.

He also thanked friends, the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for their unwavering support during the trying time.

Wanja's illustrious career saw her shine both locally and internationally, representing Kenya with distinction as part of the Malkia Strikers and Kenya Pipeline Volleyball Club.

Her remarkable contributions on the court cemented her legacy as one of the greatest in the sport's history in the country.

After retiring from professional volleyball in 2017, Wanja transitioned into coaching, using her vast experience to mentor and nurture the next generation of players.

Tributes from across the sports and entertainment industries highlight Wanja’s profound impact on Kenyan volleyball and her exceptional character.Singer Daddy Owen mourned her, saying:

I'm deeply saddened to share the loss of another cherished friend. RIP Wanja. You will forever be remembered as an exceptional and flamboyant volleyball player, whose legacy shines brightly in the history of Kenyan sports. Your name will always be etched in the annals of Kenya’s sporting achievements.

Similarly, football star Michael Olunga paid homage to Wanja’s contributions, stating:

Gone too soon champ. Your contribution to volleyball in Kenya and the sports industry was immense and will never go unnoticed. REST IN PEACE CHAMPION. LEGEND. Thoughts are with her family during this difficult period.
