William Ruto's home in Kilgoris has become a focal point of interest, particularly due to the guests he has been hosting, including AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki and Ghana’s President-elect John Mahama

Acquisition and Renovation

In 2015, William Ruto purchased the 900-acre Intona Ranch in Narok County, which was once the home of Joseph Murumbi, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics and the country's second Vice President.

Ruto acquired this expansive property after paying off a Sh8.9 million loan that Murumbi had defaulted on with the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC).

The transaction has been marred by controversy, with allegations of impropriety surrounding the sale process, including claims that Ruto's acquisition was facilitated under unclear circumstances.

Upon acquiring the ranch, Ruto undertook significant renovations to restore the estate, which had fallen into disrepair following Murumbi's death in 1990.

Historical Significance

Joseph Murumbi originally acquired the land through familial rights as a Maasai, with his mother being instrumental in securing it for him.

After returning from India where he had been studying, Murumbi built his mansion as an exclusive getaway for his family and friends.

The property was designed to host gatherings, complete with an airstrip for easy access by guests.

Murumbi's legacy is intertwined with Kenya's political history; he was an avid collector of African art and played a significant role in shaping the country's post-colonial identity.

His home became not just a residence but a symbol of his contributions to Kenya.

Current Developments

Today, Ruto's Kilgoris home is emerging as a new power centre akin to former President Daniel Arap Moi's Kabarak estate.

The President frequently retreats to this location for strategic meetings and community engagements, reinforcing its status as a hub for political activity.
