The tragic plane crash in South Korea is the worst airplane accident in the year 2024, with 176 confirmed dead.

The accident occurred on Sunday at 9.03am local time (00:03 GMT) and comes just days after another an Azerbaijan Airlines’ plane crash earlier in the week.

While air transport remains the safest means of transport, 2024 has had its fair share of tragedies and below are some of the accidents recorded this year.

Tragedy in South Korea

At least 176 people have been confirmed dead after a passenger plane veered off the runway and crashed before bursting into flames in South Korea.

The Jeju Air flight 7C 2216 from Bangkok had 175 passengers and six crew at the time of the tragedy.

Two survivors were pulled from the wreckage with rescue efforts still underway with rescue workers noting that hopes are fading for survivors.

Brazil plane crash

Voepass Flight 2283 on a domestic flight ferrying passenger from Cascavel to Guarulhos crashed near a residential area in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

All the 67 occupants on the plane died.

Saurya Airlines plane crash

Bombardier CRJ-200ER plane belonging to Saurya Airlines carrying 19 people crashes shortly after takeoff, killing 18 people.

The plane was heading to Pokhara International Airport having departed Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport.

Gazpromavia Flight 9608 from Lukhovitsy to crashes, killing all three people onboard the Sukhoi Superjet 100 during an emergency landing attempt.

Singapore Airlines Flight 321 experiences severe turbulence

A mid-air collision in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi claims two lives after a Safarilink Aviation Flight 53, (De Havilland Canada Dash 8) collided with a Cessna 172. All the casualties were in the Cessna plane, with the Safarilink flight landing safely.

Japan: Two planes collide on the runway

Japan Airlines Flight 516 collides with a Japan Coast Guard De Havilland Canada Dash 8 aircraft during landing at Haneda Airport runway.

All 379 people onboard the Airbus A350 were safely evacuated.

The accident claimed the lives of five of the six occupants of the Coast Guard aircraft.
