The National Police Service has released a statement detailing Ibrahim Mwiti’s disappearance with a section of netizens poking holes into the statement.
In a statement on Sunday, NPS clarified that the late Mwiti was not an activist based on a statement recorded by his mother on January 4, 2025 and dismissed allegations that Mwiti was abducted before his untimely demise.
According to the police, Mwiti was last seen on November 11, with his mother filing a missing person report at Kamukunji Police Station on November 15.

The statement detailed that Mwiti was involved in a hit and run accident on 12 November, with his body recovered by Juja Traffic Police. Due to lack of documentation, the body could not be identified at the scene and was moved to General Kago Hospital Mortuary as an unknown male adult.
Notably, his body had been discovered on November 12, 2024 past midnight by Juja Traffic Police after he was fatally knocked down by a hit and run vehicle while riding a hired motorcycle Registration No. KMFG 807C at Spur Mall area along the Thika Super Highway. Fingerprints of the deceased were taken by Juja Traffic Police, submitted to the National Registration Bureau, and the results dated November 21, 2024 positively identified the body as that of Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti.”
Family identifies the body 42 days after police identification
The period between November 21 when the body was positively identified as that of Mwiti and January 2, 2025 when the family identified his body at Thika Level 5 Hospital was of interest to some netizens.
It emerged that police positively identified the body on November 21, 2024, at a time when the family had already reported him missing on November 15 and was frantically searching for him, with the exercise lasting another 42 days until January 2, 2025 when they found Mwiti’s body at Thika Level 5 Hospital mortuary.

Noting that the family had filed a missing person report at Kamukunji Police Station on November 15, a section of netizens poked holes into the statement and questioned why the deceased’s family was not immediately notified as soon as the body was positively identified.
Body found at Thika Level 5 Hospital Mortuary
The body was eventually found by the family at Thika Level 5 Hospital Mortuary.
It is not clear whether the body had been identified by the time it was moved from General Kago Hospital Mortuary with some netizens questioning why the family was not informed to check with the facility if the body was of their missing kin who was yet to be found.
Mwiti was laid to rest on January 3, 2025 with police noting that his mother swore an affidavit to stop a post-mortem examination on his body – as per her religious beliefs.
Media & public cautioned on spreading unverified information
The statement further urged the media and the general public to refrain from disseminating unverified and misleading information, likely to incite the public.
