Kenya is mourning the loss of legendary volleyball star Janet Wanja Mungai.
Wanja, a celebrated setter and an icon in Kenyan volleyball, passed away after a valiant battle with cancer.
President William Ruto led the nation in paying tribute to Wanja, describing her as a disciplined and dedicated athlete who served her country with honour.
Janet Wanja, a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, served the cause of our country’s sports with honour and dedication. She was focused, hardworking and a team player. May it be comfort to her family, friends and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time. One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja.

A legacy of dedication and excellence
Wanja’s illustrious career began in the early 2000s, where she quickly rose to prominence as a setter known for her precision and teamwork.
She played for KCB from 2004 to 2005 before joining Kenya Pipeline, where she cemented her place as one of the country’s most decorated volleyball players.
Her stellar performances earned her opportunities abroad, with successful stints in Dubai and Rwanda, further enhancing her legacy.

Even after retiring from active play in 2017, Wanja remained committed to the sport, transitioning into a coaching role.
Most recently, she served as the trainer for the Malkia Strikers during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, showcasing her unwavering dedication to the team.
