Tensions flared in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Monday as police used tear gas to disperse protesters rallying against what they claim are a series of abductions.

The demonstration, which began peacefully, drew a significant crowd of Kenyans demanding accountability and justice.

Chanting slogans and holding placards, protesters accused authorities of failing to address the alleged disappearances of individuals in recent weeks.

Many participants claimed that these incidents pointed to a worrying trend of insecurity and a lack of effective response from law enforcement agencies.

Police officers responded with tear gas, causing chaos as demonstrators scattered in different directions.

The alleged abductions, which sparked today’s demonstrations, remain a contentious issue.

Families of the missing individuals are urging the government to expedite investigations and bring those responsible to justice.

In recent weeks, Kenya has witnessed a disturbing surge in abductions targeting individuals critical of the government, particularly those active on social media platforms.

Among the most prominent cases is that of Gideon Kibet, known online as 'Kibet Bull,' a cartoonist renowned for his satirical depictions of political figures, including President William Ruto.

On December 24, 2024, Kibet was reportedly abducted shortly after meeting with Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah at Taj Towers in Nairobi.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied any involvement in Kibet's abduction, refuting claims that a white Subaru associated with the agency was used in the operation.

Broader Context of Abductions

Kibet's case is not isolated. Human rights organisations, including the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, have expressed alarm over the increasing number of enforced disappearances, particularly targeting government critics.

Since anti-government protests began in June, at least 82 individuals have been reported abducted, with 29 still missing.

These incidents have drawn widespread condemnation from various sectors of society.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga, in his New Year's message, decried the abductions and called for the immediate release of all unlawfully detained individuals. He emphasised the need for the government to uphold constitutionalism, the rule of law, and justice.

Public Outcry and Government Response

The abductions have sparked significant public outcry, with citizens, activists, and public figures demanding accountability.

Notably, Kenyan celebrities such as Kate Actress, Larry Madowo, and Octopizzo have used their platforms to raise awareness and pressure the government to address these human rights violations.

In response to the growing criticism, President William Ruto has pledged to halt the abductions, asserting that Kenyan youth should live in peace. However, he also urged for discipline and politeness among the youth, a statement that has been met with mixed reactions.
