Nine people lost their lives on Friday morning following a devastating head-on collision between a shuttle and a lorry near Soi shopping centre on the Eldoret-Kitale highway.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the incident, stating that the collision occurred at around 9:30 a.m.

According to preliminary investigations, the lorry heading to Kitale lost control and collided with the oncoming matatu heading to Eldoret.

The lorry had a load of pipes while the matatu had 13 passengers, nine of whom died on the spot.

Kirinyaga accident 

Elsewhere in Kirinyaga, one woman died after she jumped from a moving matatu that had suffered brake failure. 

The incident occurred as the 14-seater matatu, en route from Karatina to Embu, was passing through Kagumo Town.

According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle's driver discovered the brake failure and immediately pleaded with passengers to remain calm, avoid opening windows, or jumping out. 

Despite his efforts, panic spread among the passengers. 

Elsewhere in Kirinyaga, one woman died after she jumped from a moving matatu that had suffered brake failure. 

A young boy managed to jump from the vehicle without sustaining any injuries. However, a woman who also attempted to escape met a tragic fate, dying on the spot.

The driver demonstrated remarkable composure, navigating the malfunctioning vehicle for approximately 10 kilometers. 

The matatu eventually came to a halt after veering into a farm near Gitwe, close to Kirinyaga University. Thankfully, no other fatalities or injuries were reported among the remaining passengers.
