Police have swung into action after Meru Woman Representative Kawira Mwangaza filed a report alleging that her life is in danger and surrendered a threatening audio recording against her.
In the 94-seconds recording, a man alleged to be a sub-county administrator is heard issuing unspecified threats against the legislator, vowing to teach her a lesson.
The main took issues with how the legislator’s Baite TV covered recent protests in by owners of private cars who were barred from ferrying passengers in Meru Town, accusing the lawmaker of heading a smear campaign against county authorities while positioning herself to contest the governorship post.
The man is heard fuming that "The TV station only aired the part where the demonstrators were throwing stones, but did not show the authorities addressing the matter. She is very stupid and we must teach her a lesson".
Police take action
The county police boss Peter Kimani confirmed that investigations had been launched to establish the truth.
"The matter is being investigated by the DCI. She gave whatever evidence she had and the matter has to be investigated to identify whether there is an offence detected. We have to identify an offence." Kimani said.
The 2017 Meru gubernatorial race was hotly contested between incumbent Kiraitu Murungi and Peter Munya.
Murungi emerged victorious with Munya bolting out of Jubilee and declaring support for Raila Odinga’s NASA before making a hasty retreat.
Mwangaza is yet to declare her interest in the gubernatorial race.
