Major universities suffered a setback after their campuses were shut down by the Ministry of Education and Commission of University (CUE).
Laikipia and Moi Universities were the most affected in the recent closure of the satellite campuses across the country.
The reason for the move was as a result of the decreasing number of students within the facilities.
Moi had four of its campuses from Kericho, Mombasa and Nakuru discontinued.
Laikipia had the highest number with six of it's satellite campuses in Eldoret, Naivasha, Nakuru, Nyahururu, Embu and Upper Hill in Nairobi permanently halted.
JKUAT's learning institutions in Westlands and Kisumu were also not spared in the wave.
Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) had the Kisumu and Nairobi CBD campuses closed.
University of Baraton's Eldoret and Nairobi campuses were not left out in the crackdown by the government.
Matiang'i suspends registration of satellite campuses
In 2018, 57 campuses were shut down after they failed to meet requirements required in the running of the institutions.
In 2016, the then Education CS Fred Matiang'i had suspended the further opening of more satellite campuses with the aim of improving the quality of education being offered in higher institutions.
Matiang'i had urged the authorities responsible for registering such branches of the varsities to stop as they offered poor quality education to students.
