Sakaja's morning tweet that could seal Miguna's fate

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Thursday said that the new nominee for Nairobi Deputy Governor, Miguna Miguna, would not take the position.

Taking on twitter Thursday morning, Sakaja cast doubts on the selection of Miguna and said: “Miguna will not become the Deputy Governor of Nairobi. Take that to the bank.”

The senator has been silent over the matter, even as Nairobi County speaker Beatrice Elachi confirmed Thursday morning, receipt of the letter from Sonko, instructing her office to begin the process of vetting the fiery lawyer.

On Wednesday evening, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko nominated controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna for the Nairobi Deputy Governor position.

Sonko forwarded Miguna’s name to Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi for vetting and subsequent approval by the House.

“I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor,” reads part of the letter.

It adds: “The nominee meets all the requirements provided for in the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, the Elections Act and County Government Act.”

The Nairobi Deputy Governor’s seat fell vacant following the resignation of Polycarp Igathe in January 2018.

Igathe, who is set to join Equity Bank as the Chief Commercial Officer, cited failure to earn Governor Sonko’s trust as his reason for resignation.

So far Miguna has not responded to the nomination yet.
