Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Friday finally responded to the Gikomba market fire that has since claimed 16 lives.

Mr. Sonko visited victims of the fierce inferno at Kenyatta National Hospital, where they are receiving treatment

"Visiting victims of Gikomba Market inferno who are admitted at KNH. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives during the unfortunate incident," he said.

Mr Sonko noted that the county Government was working with the police to see the completion of the investigations.

"My admin together with DCI is probing the incident to ascertain the cause of the fire as well come up with long term solutions to the perennial fire disasters at Gikomba Market," Sonko added.

This comes after a section of Nairobians complained that the Governor had remained mum over the early morning fire which gutted down property worth millions of shillings.

The fire left many who reside in the market homeless while traders were left counting losses.

Elsewhere, Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangí spoke tough over the incident.

Addressing journalist at Wilson Airport, the CS stated that if the investigations indicate that crime was committed leading to the inferno, then perpetrators will face the law.

Mr. Matiang’í assured Kenyans that investigations were underway and the report would be made public in due time.

“I am aware that the IG is conducting investigations on these fires we have seen in Nairobi including what happened at Gikomba.

"When the investigations are done we will make public the report. And if there is any crime that has been committed we will follow up with the perpetrators according to the law,” he said.

The minister insisted that the Government was taking the matter very seriously.
