As the curtains close on 2024, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has taken a firm stand against what he describes as a deeply painful year for Kenyans.
In a strongly worded statement released on December 31, the senator criticised the government’s handling of abductions, corruption, and violations of citizens’ rights, particularly young Kenyans.
Abductions and corruption dominate the year
According to Senator Onyonka, the year has been marked by severe challenges that evoke dark memories of Kenya’s past.
“The ongoing abductions, corruption and violation of the people's rights, especially to young Kenyans, is sad and painful to many,” he said, adding that the current state of affairs suggests the country is going back to factory settings.
The senator expressed frustration over what he termed as President William Ruto’s lack of action despite numerous appeals from citizens.
Kenyans have asked, begged, and pleaded with President Ruto to which he has given a deaf ear!
Criticism of the presidency
Onyonka accused the president of falling short of his constitutional mandate. Highlighting his disappointment, the senator said.
The president has fallen short of his Oath of Office where he should obey, preserve, protect, and uphold the sovereignty, integrity and dignity of the people of Kenya.
The senator expressed hopes that President Ruto would use his New Year message to unite the nation and demonstrate goodwill by addressing the plight of abducted Kenyans.
However, he noted with regret that the president has failed to release the young Kenyans who remain in custody.

Refusal to attend Kisii State Lodge event
As a result of his convictions, Senator Onyonka announced his decision to decline an invitation to the State New Year’s Eve Dinner at the Kisii State Lodge.
I will not be attending the State New Year - Eve Dinner... in my capacity as the Senator of Kisii County. I therefore decline the invitation.
The senator concluded by acknowledging the pain of Kenyan families searching for their loved ones during the festive season.
I’m uncomfortable with the idea that some of us will be normal, happy and excited with colour and pomp when other Kenyan families are agonising in pain.
Through out the year, the senator has been a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
