Cyprian Kimutai Limo is a multimedia journalist from Kenya who recently got an opportunity to fly to Berlin to take part in the International Journalists Program fellowship in Berlin, Germany.

After completing one month in the new environment where he has been attached to a media house, we featured the 25-year-old rising journalist on Pulse Youth Mtaani to share insights about his experience in Berlin.

As a Gen Z, he shared his unique perspectives and how different it is from Nairobi.

Can you paint us a picture of your first impression upon stepping into this vibrant city?

Imagine this, one morning you are busy fighting for space to walk on the busy streets of Nairobi then the next you are freely galavanting the streets of Berlin marveling at the ancient architecture mixed with modernism sandwiched between the occasional well-maintained public parks and flowing rivers.&nbsp;

Quite a transition indeed! What were some of the most surprising differences you encountered in terms of the weather?

OBack home, we always know whether it’s going to be rainy or sunny. Mejja was right when he said, “tuna talanta ya kucheki weather, hiyo jua, hiyo jua ni ya mvua.” Well in Berlin, one moment, the sun's out, and I'm strutting the streets like a rich African uncle, only to be caught in a sudden downpour, desperately seeking shelter.

Seriously, I've mastered the art of carrying an umbrella and sunglasses simultaneously. Apparently, it’s supposed to be summer here.

Let's talk about public transport. How did Berlin's system differ from what you were used to in Kenya?

I thought I'd seen it all when it came to matatu madness back home, but Berlin's public transport system is a whole new ballgame.&nbsp;

People here wait in line, respect personal space, and nobody's in a hurry to elbow their way in. It's like I've entered an alternate dimension! It’s funny how here the people avoid using cars because they have to stop at traffic lights which according to them slows them down and delays their journey.

Clearly someone should show them pictures of Jogoo Road on a rainy Monday evening during rush hour.&nbsp;

Now, onto something spirited – drinking culture. How does it differ from Kenya's vibrant sherehe scene?

In Kenya, tunapenda sherehe, but Berlin takes it to a whole new level. You won't believe your eyes when you see folks lounging in parks, sipping on brews like it's a weekend carnival – except it's Tuesday afternoon! Public drinking is practically a sport here, and the police? Well, they seem to be too busy handling more important things like corruption or actual crime, you know?

In the evening, parks transform into hangouts where you're just as likely to stumble upon a picnic as you are to a mini-concert. Talk about a new kind of party scene!&nbsp;

Let's talk about social interactions – how do Berliners express themselves in public compared to Nairobians

Berliners take Public Displays of Affection (PDA) to a whole new level. Walking down the street, you'll witness couples of all ages swapping kisses, holding hands, and wrapping themselves in hugs. Hapa kama huna mtu pole.

It's like the city's been sprinkled with a special potion of love, and they're sharing it with everyone. Whether young or old, love's on full display – and there's no room for shyness!

Now, cigarettes – they seem to be a common sight in Berlin. How did that surprise you?

Absolutely! Stepping off the plane, the scent of cigarettes engulfed me – a cloud of tobacco smoke everywhere. And the surprising part? Most people roll their own cigarettes! From university students to café patrons, it's like an Olympic event of puffing away. Quite the maze, indeed!

To wrap up, how has your one-month journey in Berlin shaped your perspective and growth?

Navigating Berlin has been a whirlwind adventure of culture shocks and self-discovery. While I'm still learning the art of minding my own business and recycling, I've undeniably grown as an individual.

Clout-chaser Ringtone Apoko has finally met his match. The self-proclaimed top gospel singer from East Africa tried to make fun of comedian Eddie Butita but to no avail.

On Thursday, December 30, Butita shared an image on Instagram where he was enjoying the December sun at the beach to which Apoko commented the following:

"SI UNGEBAKI NAIROBI PLACE UNAJULIKANA KWANINI ULIENDA PLACE WATU HAWAKUTAMBUI NOW U LONELY," said Apoko.

Apoko's comment was soon followed after by copious amount of laughing emojis from Kenyans who in anticipation of an online brawl set their seats waiting anxiously for Butita's response.

"Yani ulipewa RANGE ROVER ukanyimwa AKILI," Butita responded. There was no coming back. Just like in 1994 when George Foreman produced a perfectly timed right hand to knock out Michael Moorer, this bout was finished.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi will pay an official visit to Kenya between January 4 and 7, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian confirmed on Thursday, December 30.

Chinese Foreign Ministers have a long standing 31-year tradition of choosing to visit Africa as their first overseas trip in a new year.

Wang's visit will be the 32nd year in a row that a Chinese foreign minister will start their year's diplomatic activities with a visit to Africa.&nbsp;

In 2021, Wang Yi started his diplomatic trips with a visit to five African countries — Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana, Tanzania and Seychelles.&nbsp;

"China's diplomatic tradition fully demonstrates the deep friendship between China and Africa that has withstood the test of time and grown even stronger," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said during the routine press briefing.&nbsp;

"Africa and China are not only comrades-in-arms in the fight against hegemony, but also partners in development and revitalization and important forces in defending international fairness and justice," Lijian said.&nbsp;

In 2020 just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Wang Yi made an unexpected stopover in Kenya as Nairobi sought support for its attempt to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, in preference to Djibouti.

Kenya was not on the original itinerary for Yi's Africa&nbsp;tour, which was scheduled to include Egypt, Djibouti, Eritrea, Burundi and Zimbabwe.

After visiting Kenya Yi&nbsp;will continue his tour of Africa to Eritrea and Comoros.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kenyan bug has yet again bitten a foreign artist. The clearest hint was given on December 30 when jailed Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel told a fan on Instagram that he will visit Kenya soon.

During the festive season, Kenya has seen an influx of foreign artists. Over the years, only one artist has been missing the roster, Gaza King Adidja Palmer.&nbsp;

The ‘She Say’ singer is currently serving life imprisonment following his sentencing in 2014 for the slaying of an associate, Clive "Lizard" Williams. His co-accused were ‘My Life’ singer Shawn Storm, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John.

The four men were convicted in April 2014 for the slaying of Williams at Kartel’s&nbsp;former home in Havendale, St Andrew, Jamaica.&nbsp;Lawyers for the convicts had argued in their appeal that the life sentences handed down in the original trial were excessive.

They also called into question the integrity and admissibility of the evidence in the case as well as the conduct of the original trial judge, Justice Lennox Campbell.

Kartel, who has a legion of fans-cum-disciples in Kenya will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 35 years in prison.

Vybz Kartel&nbsp;has been in custody since September 29, 2011, and will now be able to travel to Kenya in the year 2046.

2021 saw Kenya transform into a global hub for international concerts with foreign artists from Nigeria and Jamaica consistently trooping in for performances.

Omah Lay, Adekunle Gold, and Etana, NSG, Konshens and Charlie Black all toured Nairobi and Mombasa since the government eased Covid-19 restrictions in October, allowing social events to be held.

It's fair to say 2021, has been a tough and brutal year for Marini Naturals CEO Mitchelle Ntalami. In November, the entrepreneur and her rumored girlfriend Makena Njeri went through an ugly publicised break-up.

As the year winds down, Ntalami has retreated to Diani for which she describes as "her home for the next coupla."

In an instagram post, the beautpreneur reflected on what was a tumultuous 2021. Dressed in a dark chocolate bikini, Ntalami shared an image looking all sexy and glammed up at Diani beach with a white motor torpedo boat appearing in the background.

In the post, Ntalami described how horrible the year has been to an extent she thought she wouldn't be happy again.

"They say that which starts sweet, ends bitter. And that which starts bitter, ends sweet. At some point this year, I never thought I’d see or feel the sweet life again. But here I am, closing my year on a high!," read the caption in part.

The bitter parts she was alluding to was when she <a href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/entertainment/celebrities/michelle-ntalami-drops-bombshell-about-breaking-up-with-her-ex-screenshots/45p7k43">ended </a>her relationship after she found out her rumored partner Makena was cheating on her.

In several lengthy posts on her Instagram on Monday November 8 Ntalami said that she was able to confirm her worst fears after speaking to the other women who were also involved with her partner.

"I met a version of me this year that I’d never known before. She was fragile, she lived mostly in her head and in the dark.

But every so often, she would whisper to me, “I know it’s pitch dark right now, but I promise you, your sunniest days are ahead of you. Just hold on.” And here I am!," continued Ntalami.&nbsp;

A week later, Makena took to <a href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/entertainment/makena-njeri-breaks-silence-following-recent-drama-involving-michelle-ntalami/6s4dnjr">Instagram </a>to affirm that she will remain bold and true to herself no matter what happens.

In a two-part statement, the Bold Network Africa CEO narrated how she has been watching as her friends and family have been judged and criticised because of their association with her.

Now, Ntalami says she is waving goodbye to the 2021 version of herself. "Thank you, and goodbye to the woman I was in 2021.

As I shed you off, I want you to know that I am eternally grateful to you. You changed me. All the fire you put me through was not to burn me to ashes, but to forge me into iron!"

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) has advised on measures that can be undertaken in case of an encounter with a wild animal.

Produce a Loud Sound

Show the hyena that you are an apex predator by making a loud noise, looking aggressive and frightening as if you are going to attack.

If you see an animal coming towards you stop,&nbsp;then back away or reroute to give that animal a path to get by you. Do not turn your back to the animal.

Make Yourself Look Big

Use a bike or your gear to try and spook the animal away from you if it hasn’t left already.

Do NOT run From the Animal

That could make you appear more like prey and entice them to chase. It is also dangerous if you choose to run and don’t know where you’re going.

Minimise Movements at Night

Most wild animals are nocturnal and have perfect vision during the dark, hence the need to avoid moving around during the dark, but if urgent, one must practice the other measures.

Former Malawi first lady Anne Chidzira Muluzi has passed away in Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.

Announcing the death, the office of the President and Cabinet of Malawi said Muluzi passed away on the night of December 29 after a long battle with cancer.

“The office of the president and cabinet regrets to announce the passing of Madam Anne Chidzira Muluzi former first lady of the Republic of Malawi.

She died on Tuesday 28th December 2021 at Aga Khan hospital in Nairobi Kenya after a long battle with cancer” reads the statement signed by Secretary to the President and Cabinet Zangazanga Chikhosi.

The statement added that the details of the funeral arrangements and repatriation of the body will be announced in due course.

Muluzi was wife to former President Bakili Muluzi and their son Atupele Muluzi is the current leader of the United Democratic Front.

Malawians have since taken to social media to send condolence to the Muluzi family and pay tributes to Anne Muluzi.

Oginga Odinga street, Ang’awa&nbsp;street and Uhuru Highway have been closed as residents in Kisumu show up in their hundreds to mark the Christmas festivities.

Twenty-four restaurants and wine sellers have set up tents on the Uhuru Highway and Oginga Odinga streets to feed the mammoth crowds. Some of the foods munched are traditional such as aliya, athola, smoked fish and local vegetables&nbsp;.

Aliya is dried beef stew. When a cow was slaughtered the remaining unconsumed meat was dried in the sun to preserve it, as there were no refrigerators.

It took about three to four days to dry completely. This meat would then be cooked and consumed, at a later date. Athola on the otherhand is a form of roasted beef stew.

Bars and restaurant operators have also mounted tents along the Uhuru Highway to sell beer, wine and food to clients.

Some of the bars and restaurants participating included Ram X B, Kakwacha Foods and Vimba club.

The festivities officially kicked off on Friday, December 24 Kisumu’s skies were painted with fireworks moments after ODM&nbsp;leader Raila Odinga launched the party.

Not even the heavy rains that had threatened to interrupt the jamboree barred residents from turning out in their numbers to mark the event.

Odinga said the carnival was one of its kind and added that charitable activities should also be a priority for residents.

“The difference between human beings and animals is what they do on earth. Let us take this opportunity to give back to others,” said Raila.
