Datally is this badass brand new app Google announced on the 30th of November, that will help Nigerians save data usage on their phones. In fact, it can help users save up to 30% of their data, in fact.

The Datally app is going to be able to run on any version of Android later than Android 5.0. and it will only be available for Android users on the Play Store. globally, today. This app was built, first with emerging markets like Nigeria in mind, and might perhaps be eventually useful for foreign markets.

When you ask the majority of internet users in Nigeria about their biggest problem with connectivity, you’ll probably hear stuff like “Oh it’s so confusing”; “I seriously don’t know how to control data usage properly”; “ït’s too expensive’; “to be honest, it’s never enough”.

This problem of data usage for Nigerians, and many people all over the world, is what inspired this app that has been two years in the making.

Google, like Facebook and many other tech companies, believe that the next one billion users are in these regions with Internet challenges. It’s why they all try to find ways to make internet connectivity cheaper and faster.

This app, Datally, is Google’s way of saying let’s put data in the hands of you, the user. This app has four features that make it powerful:

One thing many people don’t know is that a lot of apps use data in the background, whether it’s the weather report app or the Twitter app, constantly updating content and information. With the Data Saver option, you can choose which app you want to connect to the Internet or not. All you need is a simple lock and unlock button.

You can see this like a speedometer feature, orlike to call this the ultimate guilt tripper or conscience feature. Whenever a user opens an app, a small bubble appears in a corner of the screen, keeping a tally of how much data the app is consuming, in real time. Data-Tally.

This app can also alert users of the app when they start consuming a lot of data, even allowing them see how much data they’ve used on a daily, weekly, and even monthly basis.

Because life is about opportunities and how we take them, this app lets you find Wi-Fis in your vicinity. In fact, you can actually rate a connection on whether it’s good or trash, so you can save the next person trying to connect all the trouble. So it’s like how Google lets you rate locations on the Maps, but this time for Data.

This is Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, she’s Google Nigeria’ Country Director and she had this to say at the launch:“For the last few years, our Next Billion Users team has been doing a lot of research on the ground in fast growing Internet countries like Nigeria, We have found that data is a major constraint for the the next billion users. Introducing Datally into the Nigerian smartphone market will help users understand how to control their mobile data better”.She also shared some insights about how this app was tested.

“Google tested Datally in the Philippines for most of 2017, and the insights from the product tests thereshaped the final app. The user research showed that people testing the app saved up to 30% of theirmobile data, depending on the way they used Datally.” she concluded.

What are the likelihoods of success for this app?

On a scale of 0–10, I see a 9 (No 10/10, because Nigerian lecturer syndrome). This app solves a fundamental problem, and simply creates a very efficient way to solve this problem; data. Will the Telcos be happy that we can finally track the data we pay for? We don’t care. As long as the user wins.

Remember when you'd ask your parents just for permission to turn on the television and they'd be like,

Well, times have changed, and if you're still carrying last, better get used to it. Children are more confident, as it should be.

She got tired of her dad wasting her time by not subscribing to her cable, so she wrote him a letter;

Imagine her taking on the world like this, confident, determined, and sure of the things she wants, whether it's a job to be done, or a country to be run.

It’s past three in the morning, and cold

At the mercy of armed hooded men, ready to offload,

This is not a cute poem, or a poem at all.

It’s March of 2010, and Sagamu-Ore Highway is not a nice place to be at 3 in the morning. Especially when just a few weeks ago, a story was making the rounds that some robbers forced passengers to lie in the middle of the road. Next, they made a bus run over them. Why? Because they refused to part with money.

Anyway, you’re reading this because when I wanted to explain to them that I was just a broke student traveling for exams, they didn’t shoot me.

They just gave me correct beating.

A few days later, my mum and I were arguing because I wanted to travel to Lagos, by road. At Night.

A few months later, someone gave me money to fly to Port Harcourt. But the airline I used was one of those ones at Jibowu, that have four tyres, and lets us stop at Ore to eat and shit.

I think it was Ifesinachi Mass Transit.

Now, I can’t remember whether I took a bus because I needed extra cash or because I just wanted to touch asphalt.

The thing is, I love the road, very much. I love to travel by road. I love it. I love it so much I once made the decision for a 10-hour road trip, in less than 15 minutes. I just packed a small bag and hit the road.

I’ve travelled in a car with friends, from Rivers State to Kogi State, with nothing but Google Maps and a reasonable supply of junk food. (We got lost once though. The Map re-routed too quickly)

So now, I’m travelling again, but it’s nothing like I’ve ever done before. This time, I’m travelling round the entire country. In one stretch. With one backpack and nothing else.

I’m round-tripping it. So I’m leaving from Lagos, then headed to the South-South, then to the South-East, then the Middle-Belt, then the Northeast, then the Northwest, down to the North-Central, back to the Southwest, and back to Lagos.

I’m planning to spend 8 weeks max, and I intend to start mid-March, but I’ll be needing some help.

First, I’ll be writing stories on the road, and taking pictures. I don’t have a DSLR (yet), so I’ll be taking the photos with my phone and my memory. Most of it, I’ll be documenting on Pulse.

Second. I want to make this road trip cost as little as possible. That means zero hotel costs. So if you know anyone willing to spare a couch in any state, my body is ready.

Bonus: I don’t bed-wet.

Another way you can help me is by telling me things you think I should explore. Just to give you an idea, I’ll be going to Upper Sakpomba, in Edo State — the place Lawrence Anini grew up. I’ll be looking for weird things in weird places too, like the village in Ebonyi where no one is allowed to kill snakes (God, snakes terrify me). Or like the dog meat market in Itam, Akwa Ibom State. Or the vagina therapists of the North. And if you know anyone who’d take me to Sambisa, I really don’t mind to be honest. So yes, please tell me things you think I should see, or eat, or do.

I don’t think I can do this alone, mostly because I don’t have two heads. So I look forward to the things you want to share, or the ways you’d like to help.

A student most likely ends up with one of these kinds of lecturers; the first one doesn’t lecture and just gives out handouts. The second one comes to just lecture in class and leaves.

Oh wait, there’s a third one; the one that doesn’t even come for classes at all. Hopefully, you don't get this one.

So imagine your lecturer comes to class, and he’s teaching. One thing you have to cope with sometimes is how boring the lectures can get. You might be trying to take notes, but the lecturer is so boring you just sleep off on your notebook.

But what if someone else could help you write your notes while you sleep?

What if for every time you’re distracted, someone else is actually taking your notes for you?

Almost everybody has their own Acada squad; the people you read with and copy each other’s notes. What if you could all collaborate, to create that one robust lecture note everyone can gain from?

Download Google Docs on your phone or open it on your computer browser at docs.google.com.

It’s like Microsoft Word, except it’s for Google. But this is where Google Docs is better than Microsoft Word for you; it’s online. So I can take a link to a Google Document and share it with you, and even be able to edit it!

So lets say you share a Google Doc link with your Acada squad and name it “Mr Kampari’s Course 212”

Everyone in the squad takes note from all the lectures, and automatically, one person’s note, becomes everybody’s note. So even if for some reasons, you sleep off in class, or even miss the lecture, the note is right there on your phone.

So Imagine you do this, you and your squad, for an entire semester. Then any place you don’t understand, someone who understands it can actually leave small explanations for you there, and everyone can benefit too.

So by the time you’re studying, your note is not only better than everybody else’s note in class, it’s probably richer than the lecturer’s handout or whatever it is he wants to share.

Now, think of a few friends you can try it with. You’ll be amazed at the magic you and the squad will create together. It's really really easy to use, by the way.
