The Kenya Power and Lighting Company on Wednesday published a public notice highlighting a change in the company name.

The notice published in local dailies outlined that shareholders had agreed on the name change and the necessary certification had been obtained to that effect.

"Notice is hereby given that The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited has changed its name to The Kenya Power and Lighting Company PLC, following due approval by shareholders and on receipt of the certificate of change of name issued by the Registrar of Companies," the notice read.

Difference between PLC and Ltd

The slight change in name has bigger implications on the operations of Kenya's only electricity distributor.

PLC in full stands for Public Limited Company while "Ltd" is interpreted as a Private Limited Company.

A PLC company is allowed to trade shares in the stock exchange market without seeking approval from the company shareholders while a private limited company can only trade shares if the shareholders agree to do so, and they are normally traded between close associates of the company.

The new change is yet to reflect on Kenya Power's official communication channels.
