<h1>Three people were killed and 12 others critically injured in a horrific road crash in Chumvi area, Machakos County.</h1>

The accident which occurred around midnight involved a 14-seater matatu which hit a trailer as it tried to overtake a fleet of vehicles.

According to Machakos County commander Samuel Mukindia the driver tried to return to his lane while overtaking before hitting a trailer from behind.

The driver of the trailer lost control, hitting another matatu from behind.

"The matatu was unable to overtake a number of vehicles before the accident that involved a multiple of vehicles happened," Mukindia told the Standard.

The accident caused a traffic snarl-up on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as traffic police cleared the wreckage of the vehicles.

The injured passengers were taken to Machakos level 5 hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Machakos level 5 hospital mortuary.
