Speculations were rife on Thursday that Martin Kamotho popularly known as Githeri man had been appointed as a board member of the National Agency for the Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA).
Mr. Kamotho first came into the limelight after a photo of him eating Githeri from a polythene as he waited to vote during the August 8 General Election went viral on social media.
His appearance which created humor during the heated election period saw him become very popular to the point of receiving the Head of State Commendation (HSC) from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
On Thursday however, rumors had it that he was now a board member at NACADA, something that saw netizens criticize the government.
Pulselive.co.ke contacted David Mugo, who is Githeri man’s manager to find out if this was true.
In a phone interview, Mr. Mugo noted that he had not received any official communication in regard to the appointment.
"We are also shocked to hear about the appointment. There has not been any official communication from any Government office regarding the appointment if any,” he told Pulselive.co.ke.
At the same time, Mwendwa Njoka who is in charge of Communication in the Interior Ministry dismissed the appointment as mere propaganda.
He highlighted that if there was no Gazette notice to back the appointment then it is a fabrication.
"Social media cannot appoint anybody. The appointment must be on a Gazette notice for it to be true,” he said.
NACADA also responded to the allegations noting: "Do not heed to the propaganda that Githeri man has been appointed to the NACADA board. The interior Ministry is the appointing authority and as far as we are concerned there are no such appointments communicated to us".
