One of Kenya’s blue-blooded families, the Gecaga family, is currently involved in an ugly dispute over a multi-million house located in the upmarket Muthaiga estate.
The house was owned by Bethwel Mareka Gecaga, popularly known as BM Gecaga, who died in December in 2016.
Bethwel was the father-in-law to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s sister, Jeni Wambui Kenyatta.
Jeni is married to Bethwel’s son Udi Gecaga - she is also the mother to President Kenyatta’s niece Jomo Gecaga as well as KICC CEO Nana Gecaga.
Udi has now been embroiled in an ugly legal battle for the ownership of his father’s private home in Muthaiga.
Bethwel lived in the Muthaiga with his second wife, Margaret Gecaga, whom he married in 2007 – 28 years after the death of his first wife Jemimah (Udi’s mother).
After BM’s death in 2016, Margaret was hit with an eviction letter and a demand of Sh9 million rent from her step-son, Udi.
While Margaret was entitled to the house as it was her matrimonial home when BM died, legal arbitrators ruled in Udi’s favor since the house has in 2011 been transferred from a private home to one owned by a company identified as Quinvest Ltd.
The fact that the house had been bought long before Margaret got married to Bethwel was also one of the grounds why arbitrators ruled she was not entitled to get ownership of the house.
On Wednesday, Margaret was quoted by the Nation indicating she would appeal the decision made by arbitrators and fight for the house where she continues to occupy until to date.
