President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday January 5, 2018, appointed his bodyguard Edward Njoroge Mbugua to position of Acting Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service, pending a vetting exercise.
Mr Mbugua once served as the Mombasa County Commander. He was appointed alongside Mr Nur Yarao Gabao as acting Inspector General of Administration Police Service and Mr George Kinoti Mainge as acting Director of Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
The commandant has been behind the team behind President Uhuru Kenyatta's security and the Presidential Escort Unit he heads.
“By the powers conferred to me and after a wider consultation by the National police Service Commission and Inspector General and Police regulation as in the National Police Act of 2015, I hereby appoint Edward Njoroge Mbugua to position of Acting Deputy Inspector General of Police,” the president said in an address to the public.
Ideally, Uhuru is said to have a security team of 200 officers drawn from the General Service Unit. At least 200 more officers are deployed whenever the president visits in the country.

Kenyatta retained 6 cabinet secretaries while at the same time announced three new cabinet secretaries who were not allocated portfolios.

Major changes
In addition, President UKenyatta has sent Director of Criminal Investigations Mr Ndegwa Muhoro, Administrative Police boss Samuel Arachi (AP Boss), Mboya Kitili (Dpt IG) to other duties. Mr George Kinoti is acting DCI director.
