Former Governor disappears mysteriously after DPP ordered arrest

Former Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka has mysteriously disappeared without a trace after police and EACC officials raided his Nyahururu home in attempts to arrest him over alleged fraud.

The police boss in the area has confirmed the Wednesday night operation moments after DPP Noordin Haji in a statement okayed the arrest of Mr Waithaka with seven other officials over a fraudulent Sh50 million water and sewerage tender.

“The detectives were here on Wednesday night and we directed them to the former governor’s residence. They camped at his home in vain but there were no signs of his presence but all his vehicles were outside the compound,” Nyandarua North police boss Timon Odingo has said.

Details have emerged that EACC detectives and officers from Special Crime Prevention Unit Wednesday night raided Mr Waithaka's home of in Nyahururu town but did not find him. He didn’t show up at home as usual, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Meanwhile, police have acknowledged a successful operation that saw the arrest of Ms Grace Wanjiru Gitonga, the former county executive committee member for Water and Natural Resources. Two others have also been apprehended.

“Another former county government official who was said to be diabetic was not arrested but was given summons to [go to] the DCI for grilling,” Odingo has said.

Nation on Thursday reported of a confidant who had informed of a possible self-presentation to Nyeri EACC sleuths, to record statement as EACC and DPP finalizes on the charge.

“He is not around, he is on his way to Nyeri to present himself to the EACC detectives,” said the source who did not want to be named, as quoted by the paper.

According to the DPP, the former Governor is accused of flouting procurement laws which saw the disappearance of Sh50 million.

“The former county boss and Ms Gitonga will be charged with willful failure to comply with the law relating to public procurement, contrary to section 45 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, 2003,” read a statement by DPP Haji.
