Why I skipped Ruto's visit in my backyard - Waiguru

Waiguru and a host of Kirinyaga leaders missed Ruto's event

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has spoken on why she skipped Deputy President William Rutos visit to her backyard in Mwea over the weekend.

The Governor said her office had not been informed of Ruto's visit as had been the case during the Deputy President's previous visit in her county.

“My office and majority of the leaders did not have any communication from the Deputy President on his intended visit to Kirinyaga as has been the practice in previous visits. We would have expected the officers in charge to make the necessary arrangements with local leadership and communicate accordingly. Why the decision was made to bypass protocol is open for debate," Waiguru told the Nation.

Rachel Ruto is no stranger to making bold yet elegant fashion statements, but during the state visit of the Dutch royals on March 18, 2025, it wasn’t just her outfit that stood out—it was her shoes. The Kenyan First Lady stepped out in a pair of brown suede block heels adorned with a gold emblem.

The governor added that she was caught by surprised at the turn of events during Ruto's visit but was quick to add that she would steer clear of speculation over the matter.

Supremacy battles

Her sentiments were echoed by Kirinyaga County Assembly Leader of Majority James Kamau Mulango who confirmed that the county government was not invited at the DP’s event due to supremacy battles between the governor and Woman Rep Purity Ngirici.

Curiously, Ngirici, attended Ruto's event at Karoti Girls High School.

"There was no invitation, we knew that the DP would be in Meru, not Kirinyaga. Something is not right. Failure to invite us is perhaps (meant) to create impression that those who were absent do not want the DP. I met the governor (Waiguru) a day before the event and she was not aware of the visit," added Mulango.

However, in his speech, DP Ruto gave Ms Waiguru's apology and presented her donation of Sh200,000.
