Shock as businessman commits suicide after losing sports bet

Neighbours discovered the body of the father of two hanging from his house.

A 30-year-old businessman from Narok Town is said to have committed suicide after losing Sh9,000 he had earlier placed on a sports bet.

On Wednesday morning, neighbours discovered the body of the father of two hanging from his house.

According to his friends, Joseph Kariuki, popularly known by his nickname “Scorpion”, had hoped to use the winnings of the bet to service a bank loan as well as pay rent for his business premises and house.

This was not the first time such a case was witnessed involving the deceased.

In 2015, Kariuki had also attempted suicide after floods swept away his house.

Kariuki ran a business of selling audio-visual compact discs and public address equipment in Narok Town.

Those who knew him described the father of two as an ambitious and hard-working businessman.

Narok OCPD Paul Kiogora confirmed the incident and thereafter the body of the deceased was taken to the Narok Referral Hospital morgue.

Similar incidents

Last year, a student from the Kenyatta University student committed suicide after losing Sh 80,000 bet he had placed between a Euro Quarter Finals match between Germany and Italy.

The deceased, who was staying in Nairobi, travelled to his village in Uriri after the loss and hanged himself behind his mother's house.

Later that same year, a middle-aged man Last year borrowed Sh45,000 bank loan and placed all the stake on Spanish football club Real Madrid using two different accounts on a popular online betting firm.

He was found hanging from a tree soon afterwards, after his team lost to arch-rivals Atletico Madrid through a solitary goal.
