Imagine yourself on a golf course whose green has been trimmed, with the sun shining and the smell of fresh grass in the air. You are staring at an unseen object of desire, holding onto your club.
Swinging your club, you take a deep breath and see your ball fly smoothly through the air to land in the hole. This amazing feat is called a hole-in-one, and it is every golfer’s dream come true.
A hole-in-one captures the essence of what makes golf so special. Moments like these become highlights for golfers and golf enthusiasts at the NCBA Golf Series, which is now regional with tournaments in Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.
What exactly is a hole-in-one?
A hole-in-one literally means one hit of the golf ball from a tee into the hole. Sounds easy? Not really!
Typically, an 18-hole golf course presents unique challenges such as how far they are away from each other or even possibly sand traps or water hazards along their paths, among other things like wind that can change suddenly and unpredictably.

Therefore landing a hole-in-one involves more than mere skill but also timing, accuracy and maybe some luck.
As Lady Captain Priscilla Karobia explained during NCBA Golf Series’ stop at VetLab Golf Club, the secret is staying calm despite the various factors a golfer has to consider.
When a golfer finally achieves a hole-in-one, it’s a story they’ll tell for years, a personal triumph that cements their place in the long-standing tradition of the game.
How to land a hole-in-one
Golfers use a variety of tactics to increase their chances of scoring a hole-in-one.
One common strategy is choosing the right club. For shorter holes, a high-lofted club like a 9-iron or wedge allows for better control and accuracy.
Another tactic is to take advantage of the wind. Skilled golfers know how to use the wind to their advantage. They can either let the wind carry the ball closer to the hole, or use it to curve around obstacles.
Precision and control are key, and golfers often practise for hours to perfect their swings, aiming to find that perfect balance of power and accuracy.
