Radio Presenter arrested for stepping on Money

He is being held at the Central police Station

A popular Radio Presenter attached to Tanzanian Clouds FM Soudy Brown and Singer Maua Sama are being held at the Dar es Salaam Central Police station after being arrested on Monday.

The two were arrested after they shared videos on social media, while dancing and stepping on money that had been placed on the floor.

According to the Officer in charge of Central Police Station Mr. Mambosasa, the two will be charged with an act of disrespecting and lowering the dignity of the Tanzanian currency.

“Wawili hao wanadaiwa kukamatwa na Polisi Kinondoni jana jioni na tayari wameshahamishiwa Central Polisi. Wawili hao walishikwa siku ya jana baada ya kupost video mtandaoni inayowaonekana watu wakicheza wimbo ‘Iokote’ wa Maua Sama huku wakiwa wanakanyaga hela,” reported a local daily in Tanzania.

Under the Tanzanian law, it’s a crime for anyone to step on money or currency in whatever circumstances they are in.

"Tunao suoudy and Maua ambao wanashikiliwa kwa uharibifu wa pesa, na watafikishwa mahakamani upelelezi ukikamilika. Na tunaendela kuwakamata wengi kisha waende Mahakamani wote” said Mambosassa.

Another country that shares the same laws on currency with Tanzania, is Thailand.

In Thailand Stepping on the country's currency, is also a criminal offence. The currency notes and coins contain an image of the king and stepping on it would offend his dignity.

In Kenya it's illegal to burn money. Under the Kenyan law, all Kenyan currency belongs to the government.

If your money is torn, you are supposed to take it to the bank, it will be replaced.
