International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan visited Kenya on August 4, to grace the graduation ceremony of Mount Kenya University, where he was bestowed with an honorary doctorate of law degree.

Khan’s visit to Kenya has attracted significant attention, given his esteemed position as the Chief Prosecutor of the ICC.&nbsp;

The decision to confer an honorary doctorate of law degree upon the ICC prosecutor&nbsp;Khan was a recognition of his remarkable contributions to the field of international law and justice.

“This conferment is in recognition of the following: seasoned international criminal law and Human rights lawyer, Community outreach in support of social emancipation through education, service in the fight against terrorism, research and publications, other appointments and awards,” the university stated in a statement.&nbsp;

He is not a stranger to Kenya, having represented President William Ruto as his lawyer at the ICC.&nbsp;

His expertise in international criminal law, honed through years of handling high-profile cases, has earned him a reputation as a principled and diligent legal practitioner.

Khan is a holder of a Bachelor of Laws degree with Honours, from King’s College, University of London, and several other degrees and qualifications.&nbsp;

He has amassed massive experience in his more than 30 years of distinguished service as a barrister. He has been a King’s Counsel since 2011.&nbsp;

He is also a Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn and was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court in 2018.

President William Ruto has made a grand return to the Hague in the Netherlands, this time as the head of state and commander in chief of the Republic of Kenya.&nbsp;

This is the first time Ruto has returned to the city since 2013 when he appeared at the International Criminal Court.

On Monday, May 2023, President Ruto was accorded a head of state treatment, riding with a convoy and outriders to meet with the King of the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at Noordeinde Palace in the Hague.&nbsp;

Ruto's return to the Hague is a symbolic moment for him, as he was previously accused of crimes against humanity following the 2007-08 post-election violence and faced trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

However, his case was withdrawn in 2016 due to a lack of evidence.

During his meeting with the King, Ruto expressed his commitment to strengthening the relationship between Kenya and the Netherlands.&nbsp;

In a statement released after the meeting, President Ruto emphasized the importance of expanding trade between Kenya and the Netherlands, particularly in the areas of horticultural products, tea and coffee, fruits, and fish.

He also expressed his desire to work with the Netherlands to advance Kenya's agenda for green growth and wildlife conservation.

President Ruto further noted the Netherlands' continued support for Kenya's efforts to develop arid and semi-arid lands, rural domestic water supply and sanitation, health, urban development, and agricultural research.

The meeting with King Willem-Alexander was the latest in a<a href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/news/local/details-of-rutos-tour-to-gcas-floating-office-in-rotterdam-netherlands/b4vycz7"> series of diplomatic engagements by President Ruto</a> as part of his efforts to promote Kenya's interests and strengthen the country's relations with the international community.

Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed receiving Azimio la Umoja's letter demanding action over the conduct of the police during mass protests led by opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Among the concerns shared by the opposition is alleged police negligence during the raid at Northlands Farm in Ruiru, Kiambu County and the destruction of property at East Africa Spectre that is owned by opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The lead prosecutor had not decided whether to launch investigations into the matter or not and declined to comment further on the matter when contacted by Sunday Nation.

The Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) neither confirmed nor denied if the grounds cited by Azimio meet the threshold for the pre-trial chamber to authorise investigations and a determination on whether the matter will move to prosecution.

“Under article 15 of the Rome Statute, any individual or group may send information (communication) on alleged crimes to the ICC prosecutor, who is duty bound to protect the confidentiality of the information received,” the OTP said.

If the grounds cited by Azimio merits investigation, the OTP shall submit to the Pre-Trial Chamber a request for authorisation.

“If the Pre-Trial Chamber...considers that there is a reasonable basis to proceed with an investigation, and that the case appears to fall within the jurisdiction of the court, it shall authorise commencement of the investigation, without prejudice to subsequent determinations by the court with regard to the jurisdiction and admissibility of a case,” reads section 4 of the Article.

The letter by Azimio saw Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua respond alleging that it is part of a scheme to intimidate IG Japhet Koome.

“I see they want to intimidate the IG, but I ask you to continue doing your job professionally. Had they not come to the streets, there would have been no issue between the police and the demonstrators. So let them keep their people at home,&nbsp;"Gachagua slammed.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has responded to Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s letter to the International Criminal Court (ICC) with strict instructions to the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome.

A tough-talking Gachagua downplayed Odinga’s claims that the government extrajudicial force to contain Azimio la Umoja protesters during the recent demonstrations.&nbsp;

Speaking in Nyandarua on Saturday, April 15, the DP noted that, it is Odinga and his team who should be sent to the Hague for the destruction of property and lives lost during the protests that were called by the opposition.

"In fact, the people who should be taken to ICC are those <a href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/news/local/oparanya-reveals-how-dpp-haji-brokered-ruto-raila-truce-to-halt-azimio-protests/kvrybpx">Azimio characters who have destroyed the life and property</a> of the people of Kenya," Gachagua fired while challenging the opposition chief to make his recent threat that protests could resume after Ramadhan real.&nbsp;

He appealed to the IG to exercise his duties without fear or favour during protests and ensure that human life and property are protected.

'I see they want to intimidate the IG, but I ask you to continue doing your job professionally. Had they not come to the streets, there would have been no issue between the police and the demonstrators. So let them keep their people at home, "Gachagua slammed.

"IG if those people come to the street, do your job in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya. Protect the life and property of Kenyans," he added.

Gachagua alleged that Odinga is keen on finding his <a href="https://www.pulselive.co.ke/news/politics/raila-settles-on-7-allies-to-represent-azimio-in-bipartisan-talks-with-kenya-kwanza/e7zqx18">way into government through the backdoor</a> and is using the demonstrations to push the same, adding that unlike the previous regime, they would not agree to a handshake.

"We are not like the previous government that agreed to the handshake. We are stronger," Gachagua added.

Odinga called off the protests on Sunday, April 02 after a truce was brokered with President William Ruto agreeing to address part of the concerns raised by the opposition through a bipartisan process anchored in law.

Consequently, both sides of the political divide assembled teams of politicians to engage in talks.

Kapseret MP Oscar Kipchumba Sudi has disclosed that there are plans to revive the International Criminal Court (ICC) case against Deputy President William Ruto, in order to stop him from vying for presidency, in 2022.

In an update on Facebook, Sudi said the DP’s political enemies have been working round the clock to see this become a success.

“PLANS TO STOP WILLIAM RUTO USING ICC.

Last year, I told you of the evil schemes crafted by William Ruto's political enemies with the aim of stopping him from running for office. Nancy Gitau and Solicitor General with the help of their master are the architects of this evil scheme. They began by sending three Police Officers to Eldoret Central Police Station to pick files recorded during post election violence 2007/8. They also sent the former OCPD Eldoret (2007/8) Mr. Titus Karuri to the Hague with the motive still unknown,” read his post in part.

Oscar Sudi went on to state that Lawyer Paul Gicheru who surrendered to the ICC five years after a warrant was issued by the international court was sent, and the mission is to have the case against William Ruto reopened.

The Kapseret MP mentioned that what is currently happening is what was said by COTU boss Francis Atwoli a few months ago, when he said that DP Ruto will never be President of Kenya.

Sudi added that they are not scared of the evil schemes being planned against the DP, because they have God on their side.

“They have now sent Lawyer Paul Gicheru to surrender himself to ICC. All these plans are done subsequently with the aim to revive ICC case against Deputy President William Ruto. This is what that self declared government mouthpiece Francis Atwoli referred to when he claimed that William Ruto will not be on the ballot come 2022. Unfortunately, you cannot separate the two ICC cases both for DP Ruto and the one for President Uhuru Kenyatta the cases remain inseparable. I wish to tell them that we are not scared about these evil schemes, we know each and every detail of their secret plan to tame William Ruto. We believe we have God on our side, let them bring it on,” added Oscar Sudi.
