A social media trend started on Wednesday morning by a section of bloggers associated with the government has caused confusion on whether it was calculated at embarrassing Jubilee politicians who are campaigning for Deputy President William Ruto.
The hashtag #congratulationsmheshimiwa took a satirical tone and purported to congratulate MPs who had completed working for Kenyans and were "busy campaigning for 2022".
The trend appears was widely shared by a section of Twitter influencers, to the point that it appeared in the top ten trending topic.
The images used in the campaign appear to have been thoroughly planned with an elaborate graphic design.
The MPs targeted by the satirical posts included Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, Kirinyaga Women Representative Purity Ngirici, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, among others.
Curiously, all the politicians, who were attacked through the hashtag, belong to the Jubilee wing of the coalition that has been actively campaigning for Ruto.
"A group of bloggers who worked for us in last elections&attached to one of the officers I alluded to recently are now offering “congratulatory” messages to Kuria, Kangata, Ichungwa, Nyoro, myself among others. Incidentally Kangata & I don’t have CDF but thanks anyway," Murkomen said on Twitter.
Kuria, on his part, dismissed the social media campaign as "rubbish" and promised to deal with bloggers who are masquerading and pretending to work for the government.
"I will deal with some of these bloggers who are masquarading as working for the government. They are not recognised as government employees and whatever they are involved must be their own agenda," Kuria said in a phone conversation with Pulselive.co.ke.
