Vaginal sex can result in bleeding after sex.

Light bleeding is ordinarily no cause for concern. Post coital bleeding occurs in premenopausal women from the cevrix.

For postmenopausal women, it's from the cervix, uterus, labia and urethra.

These are the causes of postcoital bleeding.

2. Vaginal atrophy

Common in women who are perimenopausal, menopausal and have had their ovaries removed. This causes your estrogen levels to be lower thus your vagina could become dry and inflamed. This also reduces the elasticity of your vagina causing tissues to become thinner and shrink. This can lead to discomfort, pain, and bleeding during sex.

3. Vaginal dryness

Vaginal dryness can cause bleeding. The dryness could be brought on by breast feeding, childbirth, having your ovaries removed, medications, chemotherapy, having sex before full arousal, douching and chemicals in perfumed soaps or pools.

4. Polyps

These are noncancerous growths found on the endometrium. Since polyps dangle off the flesh, their movement can irritate the surrounding tissue and cause bleeding.

5. Vaginal tearing

Rough sex can cause small cuts to appear on the vagina. This is more likely to happen when you have sex when your vagina is dry.

6. Cancer

Irregular vaginal bleeding is a symptom of vaginal or cervical cancer. Bleeding after menopause can also be a sign of uterine cancer.
