Drama unfolded at an event attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua with residents clashing with the police and goons who attempted to disrupt the event in Nyandarua.

Gachagua who was the chief guest at the thanksgiving service for Shamata Ward MCA Gitau Njamba in Nyandarua County was at the dias when a teargas cannister was lobbed towards where he sat with his security detail swinging into action.

According to eye-witness accounts, corroborated by videos of the event, residents overpowered the police forcing them to retreat.

All was well until Nyandarua Senator John Methu took to the podium when chaos broke out.

Videos circulating online show the irate crowd engaging police officers in what appears to be a confrontation with the police firing teargas cannisters into the air.

Shots fired

Media reports further indicate that shots were fired into the air to disperse the crowd that at some point overwhelmed the police.

Gachagua condemned the violence, slamming the police for teargassing locals and guest at the event.

I want to tell our officers please, right now. You're saying that a civilian threw a tear gas canister at us. Where did they get it from? You came here pretending to ensure security yet you are teargassing people.

Gachagua links Ruto & area MP to chaos

He accused Ndaragua Member of Parliament George Gachagua of orchestrating the chaos, alleging that the MP acted under instructions of President William Ruto.

Nonetheless, Gachagua noted that threats and violence will not deter him in his quest for a better Kenya, affirming that he will continue to criticise the government
