In 2016, our Instagram feed was blessed with beautiful travel pictures of stunning beaches, historic towns, vibrant cities, safari rides, mountain climbing and lush islands in Tanzania, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco.

But this year, a lot of people have been adding Gambia to their bucket list. To these people, pursuing hiking trails, bathing in the sun, exploring diverse landmarks and getting acquainted with beautiful culture and traditions makes Gambia a must visit.

Peaceful, serene and harmonious, Gambia makes for a perfect holiday destination. The country is rich with beaches and is home to many safari camps. It also boasts of rich traditions and culture, tourists can revel in its awesomeness while also enjoying the country’s beautiful landscapes.

Hello, 2017 globe trotters, Gambia is waiting for you. Here are some highlights to consider if you are visiting:

Kunta Kinteh Island: For slave trade history

Formerly known as James Island, it is a tiny island located in River Gambia and joins the Atlantic Ocean. The island is particularly significant for their relation to the beginning and the abolition of slave trade.

Katchikally Crocodile Pool: See and greet friendly crocodiles

This is a sacred pool that came into being in a mystical way. The pond is sacred in its nature and it is inhabited by friendly crocodiles.

Local Gambians also revere it for its healing powers and as a place where people come to pray for blessings. The pond also house a community owned museum. It has a display collection of around 1,000 historical objects housed in four African styled round huts.

Banjul: Commercial Hub

Banjul is the capital city of The Gambia. It is a place that accommodates all tribes of The Gambia. It is the commercial hub of the country as far as the port is concerned with the administrative occupation.

Apside from being the capital city, Banjul has a lot stunning beaches and it houses an Atlantic port, which serves as a crossing point to other parts of the country.

Janjangbureh: The Islands that put Hawaii to shame

Janjabureh is one of the most beautiful places in Gambia.  It is an island where every minute spent is a moving and memorable lesson.

Wassu, Kerbatch Stone Circles: Awesome concentration of megaliths

Listed in the World Heritage Sites, Wassu and Kerbatch Stone Circles is among the natural, cultural and physical significance places in The Gambia.

Historical and cultural significance of the stone circles revealed it to be a unique concentration of megaliths. And nowhere is there such a large concentration of megaliths as it is found on the north bank of the River Gambia.

Other places to see include the Abuko Nature Reserve, Brufut beaches, Tanji Museums, Brikama markets and so many more.

Gambia is the country everybody will be visiting in 2017

If you are in your 20s, 30s and 40s, and you eat healthy, don’t smoke and you use sunscreen, you have got a good headstart.

But if you’re looking in the mirror right now and wondering where your fresh-faced complexion went, be reassured — it is never too late to fix things naturally.

To look and feel radiant you must provide your body with the raw materials (the essential nutrients) to make the best cells and hormones to keep you looking young. You need vitamin A, C and E, and fatty acids.

Eating colourful vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, with small amounts of whole grains and fruit, and staying hydrated, could help you to look younger than your age.

Other superfoods that are rich in antioxidants as listed by Daily Mail are:

Acai (available as a powder from health food stores): Add to smoothies and juices for healthier, fresher-looking skin.

Blueberries: Calms inflammation. Use fresh or frozen.

Dark, green vegetables such as kale: Rich in vitamins A, C, K, plus calcium and iron, these are great for your skin’s immunity.

Green tea: Contains anti- oxidants called polyphenols, making it good for warding off inflammation and free radicals.

Pomegranate seeds (pictured): Packed with vitamin C to help fight skin damage.

Things you should avoid

Margo Marrone, a British pharmacist recommends being as vigilant when buying a products or processed food items.

‘Look out for preservatives called parabens — they will be listed as methylparaben, ethylparaben or isobutyl. They get absorbed and go straight into the bloodstream and can mimic oestrogen in the body.

‘Formaldehyde is a carcinogen, so watch out for formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. These are not listed as formaldehyde, but as 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1, 2-diol, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate.’

Application for the yearly Brunel University International African poetry prize is now opened.

Entry is opened to all Africans poets who love to write, no age, nationality or location restriction. All African citizens are encouraged to send in entries to be considered.

See below for all the details on how to apply. Deadline is on 1st Dec (11.55pm) 2016.

The shortlist will be announced  March 6th 2017.

The winner of the Prize will be announced on May 2nd 2017.

1. The prize is open to African poets, defined as those who were born in Africa, or who are nationals of an African country, or whose parents are African.

2. The prize is open to African poets who have not yet had a full-length poetry book published. Self-published poetry books, chapbooks and pamphlets are exempt from this stipulation.

3. Only poems written in English are accepted. Poems translated into English are also accepted with a percentage of the prize going to the translator.

4. The prize opens for submissions from October 1st 2016 to December 1st 2016. Each entrant must submit 10 poems to be eligible, no more and no less.There is no stipulation as to the content of submitted poems but no poem should exceed 40 lines in length.

6. The poems may have been previously published or won previous awards.

7. Poems must be emailed in a SINGLE word document attachment (not PDF) – with an index cover page that contains the entrants’ name, nationality, country of birth, full address including country of permanent residence, personal email address and telephone number. All entries must be submitted via email only to BUAPP@brunel.ac.uk.

An acknowledgement will be sent. (Please note that email enquiries about the rules will not be answered.)

9. Poems must be the original work of the entrant.

10. Poems should be single spaced.
