Another University Student commits suicide in a Lodging

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents

Another Student from the Co-operative University College of Kenya has killed himself at a lodging at the Kapsoit trading centre in Ainamoi Constituency, Kericho County.

According to Belgut OCPD Philip Okello, the 21 year old identified as Eric Kiprotich Bowen, committed suicide using a poisonous substance.

The OCPD, added that Bowen had partied with his friends at Kapsoit trading centre, before retiring to his room, where he committed suicide.

Mr. Okello divulged that, Bowen had called one of his family members informing him that he was on the verge to commit suicide.

The worried family member called the owner of the guest house, where the student had booked asking him to go check on Bowen. When the guest house owner knocked on the student’s room, he did not open the door.

Poisonous substance

They alerted police officers from the Kapsoit post, who arrived at the lodging and found the student had already died.

A bottle of poisonous substance was found in Bowen’s room. The student’s body was moved to Kericho District Hospital mortuary.

Another death

This comes days after another student from Kisii University also committed suicide after he differed with his parents over a woman he was dating.

The 24 year-old, identified as Ronald Misiani Oira, hanged himself on a tree, leaving behind a suicide note. His body was moved to Gucha District Hospital.

Research shows that suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and teenagers.

According to the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), about 8 out of every100,000 teenagers committed suicide in 2000. For every teen suicide death, experts estimate there are 10 other teen suicide attempts.
