Here are the best sleeping positions when pregnant

Pregnant?This is how to sleep

We all sleep in different positions depending on what style makes us comfortable. This, however, is bound to change for pregnant women.

When you are pregnant, your health and that of your unborn baby are paramount. Therefore, your sleeping position must not only be comfortable for you but also safe for your baby.

In the first few months of your pregnancy, you may have no problems sleeping in whichever way you wish. But as the belly bulges, however, the need to selectively choose an alternative sleeping style arises. You realize that you can no longer sleep on your belly and you are thus left with two choices: sleeping on your back or on your side.

While sleeping on your back can seem to be a more comfortable position, doctors do not recommend it. Sleeping on your back affects your breathing system and can also constrict the aorta thus affecting the transfer of blood and nutrients to the placenta.

The reduced circulation in your body in return puts the baby’s health at risk. Studies have also revealed that women who sleep on their backs when pregnant are at a higher risk of having still births.

So, what is the best sleeping position when pregnant?

The only option you are left with now is to sleep on your side. However, you should only sleep on your left side which is the safest position for both you and the baby. Sleeping on the left side ensures that the aorta and the vena cava are not compressed easing blood circulation for both you and the baby.

If sleeping on your side is not your thing, practicing it in the first months of pregnancy will help you to easily adjust and get used to it.
